WHY IS IT WE DON'T DO MORE WITH OUR LIVES TODAY?

Where have the multifaceted persons gone to?

This is a question I need to do some research on!

The first thing I thought of was that all the people we learn about that are multifaceted or multitalented,  is because they are the ones recorded by the people who write about history. Either that or the person was a public figure and thus was guaranteed to be recorded in the historical record.

One sad fact throughout history has been the fact that most people go about their lives never being in the public eye. They live and love and contribute to the family, to their neighbors, their church, their schools, their work, with little exception are happy to do so. While the vast majority seldom if ever get mentioned in the history books, they still remain the backbone of a community and a nation.

I also know that today we have one hell of a lot of people in the news, including actors, politicians, criminals(especially criminals), a few Religious Leaders, and writers. Every once in a while we will have a person who is a nationally known and loved person, such as, Jimmy Carter, June Carter, and Dolly Parton. Each of them is multi-talented and loved by most everybody. In addition, they are each public spirited and have done a lot to assist in Charitable Organizations.

But I would like to think that during my life time I have tried to do my work for the greater good and sometimes I think I even succeeded. But as anybody who knows me knows that what I have accomplished or not accomplished has not been chronicled anywhere. Because I was working for the ASA(Army Security Agency) for about 15 years, neither they nor I wanted any public attention of any kind.

Now to get back to the question in the title, why don't we do more with our lives today? The first part of that question is: That we actually do more then you would think but it is for the accomplishment of own more personal and family matters.

I think it is primarily because we have to work so hard for so many hours, and then when we have children we have to act as chauffeurs, supporters, and all around champions that when the day is done, we are worn out.

In the World today, most people are not inclined to seek public office as it puts you under the magnifying glass of the Media, and the media do nothing but seek self-aggrandizement, not caring whether the publish the truth or not. To me, it is sickening what we allow the the media to do under the guise of Free Speech.

Our daily lives as described below, drives most of us to distraction:

We have to drive through horrendous traffic lasting an hour or more one way to work, then add the same problem trying to get home from work.

When the children are young we must find and pay for child care, which puts more pressure on us, because we have to drop off and pick up our children by certain fixed times everyday.

When we have to work overtime, the stress level jumps 300% because we have to find somebody to watch the children.

The days of stay at home mothers is long gone, with a few exceptions. In todays world, virtually all families must have two wage earners to make ends meet.

The majority of parents are afraid to allow their children to go outside and play without adult supervision.

The media does not help any with their constant coverage and hype whenever there is any kind of confrontation between suspected criminals and the police.

Combine all of this with the violent games children play on their Play Stations, XBoxes, and computers and you have a mentality that leads to the loss of the difference between reality and gaming.

Does anybody wonder that we have lost our Multi-talented and Multi-faceted individuals? Or maybe I should say we still have them, but we are too busy trying to keep house and family together to try and expose ourselves to outside scrutiny.

I guess this answers the question of where have the multi-faceted and multi-talented people disappeared  to: they haven't disappeared, we are just too damn busy living life at 200% of the speed of life.

Flattered by my Granddaughter asking my help.

 Flattered by my Granddaughter asking for my help.

I have to say, that it is really flattering when one of my grandkids asks for my help. Felicity came to me, this last Sunday, asking me to help her out with a project she wanted to do for school. Of course she also wanted to make a really good grade.

Her project was to make an earring stand out of wood. Now, since I have a workshop full of woodworking tools, not to mention that Felicity has a Tool Box full of woodworking tools, which she got for Christmas last year, I was glad to help her along.

I let her choose the wood  she wanted to use, and she also chose the design she wanted to use. So, I assisted her in cutting and shaping as we were using my power tools, and she is a little leery of using them.

Anyway, here are a couple of pictures of her first attempt:

 Now she seemed to be satisfied with this result. But, keep in mind I was assisting her, in her design.
She showed it to her Grandmother Debbie and after they discussed it and tried it out, it didn't really work out very well at all. So Debbie and Felicity came back and asked if we could do something better.

I was happy to help, so back to the workshop to try again. This time we used thinner wood, added hooks for clip type earrings, and drilled smaller holes in the thinner wood for mounting earrings with posts. In addition we made a wooden stand with a slot cut into it to hold the earring mount.

Just so you know, she will be showing both results in her class, and explaining that your first result doesn't always work out, but you have to keep trying.
I'm right proud of Felicity.
