Yesterday, Sunday that is, I was preparing dinner. I was in the process of chopping onions on one of those mandolin slice and dice machines when my thumb slipped down in the blade path and I sliced off a chunk of my thumb. Blood, blood everywhere.
I bound it up but it would not stop bleeding. (I take potent blood thinners for my heart.) So I hoped in my car and drove down to the emergency room at the Piedmont Fayette Hospital. I checked in and I waited and I waited and I waited, while all of the time my thumb was bleeding into the towel wrapped around my hand. The triage nurse finally put me in the fast track waiting room after 2 hours of waiting.
I was in the fast track waiting area for another 2 hours at which time the physicians assistant put in three stitches. This was after sticking my thumb at least 6 times with lidocain. that hurt worse that the thumb did, and worse then my bad knee.
My dentist never hurt me that bad.
So after 4 hours I am finally stitched up, the bleeding is stopped and I hurt like hell. No antibiotics and no pain medicine. I was instructed to see my family physician, which I did today.
I am now on antibiotics and pain medication and I am feeling some better. My thumb is infected, it is red, swollen, and it throbs.
It does not help that the stitches hang out and catch on every little thing. owwwww!!!
As I said in the beginning it s and emergency isn t it?? Four hours, that s four hours later, give me a break.
