THE TAU OF WATER AND ICE.
Did you know that water has a specific gravity of "1"(one). This means that the specific gravity of everything else is measured against the specific gravity of water. Considering that the earth's surface is about 70% covered by water, this actually makes sense. Something you need to know is that we are talking about pure water. The specific gravity of water changes when it has impurities in it.When I started this, I had something original in mind concerning the Tau of water and ice, but now I can't remember what my thoughts were, I have lost them. Is that because of age, or is it because I was distracted with something else.
At any rate, I reckon I will put this on the back burner, and maybe my thoughts will return.
Well! here it is, 2 weeks later and I still haven't remembered exactly what I had in mind when thinking about the Tau of Water and Ice.
I think I was considering the fact that when water freezes it floats. Think about this now, why does ice float on water? You would think it would sink under the water, but it doesn't, it floats. Now even though it floats, over 90% of the ice is underwater and so it is really deceptive when you look at a lake frozen over.
How thick it the ice on the water? a fraction of an inch, an inch, several inches, or several feet? In order to find out you need to either break the ice, or cut a hole in it. You really have to find out before deciding whether to venture out onto the ice. I for one do not like finding out the ice is too thin to hold my weight, and I'll bet none of you would like to do so either.
So! do you know why ice floats? The answer is because ice is less dense then water and therefore it floats. Why is it less dense? because as the temperature drops the water's molecules are much less active, which allows Hydrogen Bonding to occur, and as it does a crystalline structure forms, which in turn increases the distance between molecules, thus reducing it's density.
Which brings us back to the Tau of water and ice, which is, the Tau of water is one, and the Tau of Ice is .9.
And that folks is my philosophical treatise for today.
God Bless us all, from the gahillbilly.
