VOYAGER 2 HAS ARRIVED IN OUTER SPACE.
Why am I writing about this you might ask, it is because I worked on both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, back in the 70's. During that time I was working for a company called DCA Reliability Laboratories.
DCA Reliability Laboratory was one of only two companies authorized and certified to test and approve or disapprove electronic components for use in and on the space program. The testing requirements are extremely strenuous.
And no, not all the products submitted for testing and approval passed the testing, but those that did pass were then added to NASA's approved list of products. Please keep in mind these components would be riding up into space in a rocket, then have to withstand the rigors of space, including vacuum, exstreme heat, extreme cold, and more.
Something I should mention, is while the parts are submitted for testing, a team of us Engineers had to go to the factory where the parts were made and then verify and approve the entire production line to ensure it met Military Specifications for Space Worthy parts. About 60% of the time the manufacturer did not get approved. My team would make a list of required changes and upgrades required in order to meet NASA's Standards. Once the Manufacturer sent us word they had made the required improvements, I and my team would go back and verify said requirements.
Once that was done, the manufacturer and his components would be approved for NASA's space program.
Once that was done, the manufacturer and his components would be approved for NASA's space program.
As an Engineering Sales Manager I had all of these responsibilities. In my position as an Engineering Sales Manager and having a Top Secret Crypto Clearance, I was included in the planning for many of the Top Secret space programs including Voyager 1 and 2, GPS 1 and 2, First Mars Lander, First Venus Fly By, Saturn Missile Program, and many more.
I enjoyed the work and felt privaleged to be able to work on the space program.
more later from the ga hillbilly.
